"Let's try democracy!"

This is my two point program for America: (1) A transparently honest vote count (2) A free, diverse, and uncensored press.

Maybe our government would become less interested in military adventures abroad and more interested in providing sufficient food, housing, and opportunities for our people at home.

Mark Twain: If voting did any good, it would be made illegal.

I think circa 1890, and most likely paraphrased slightly, as most things are from my memory banks, save for general concepts.

As Josh may recall, I said there are two things necessary for a bona fide Democracy: 1) An educated population, which I'm sorry to say after 25 years teaching, writing letters, going to hearings ad infinitum, living off grid for 16 years ('83 - 97, with family of four), yada, yada... doesn't seem to be available; 2) An active public. Still trying to be an optimist, I'm hoping beyond hope, that as our institutions collapse and we can work hard to create islands of sanity that can connect and work with other, offering the best we all have. If there any shamans, we appear to be it.

The January 6 events (meaning specifically, the part on neglecting security, plus inviting protestors in, followed by escalation by way of shooting an unarmed woman who had been in the company of a BLM provocateur) had one very important result and, I think, purpose. They aborted the dangerous discussions that were ongoing at that very minute about irregularities in the election. An important procedure was stopped mid-course, only due (or thanks, depending on viewpoint) to the events in the Capitol. Wikipedia spins it as follows below*), but I was following that meeting (by stream), and my understanding is that the outcome could have been pro Republican had it not been stopped then and there. What do you all think? Anyone observed it that way, too?

*) "They sought to keep Trump in power by preventing a joint session of Congress from counting the electoral college votes to formalize the victory of President-elect Joe Biden."

Your assessment is a refreshing approach to enlightening the electorate to this problem without a hint of favoritism or divisiveness. We sure could use a lot more of this kind of writing..."real" journalism, which appears to be barely breathing on the mainstream these days.
