Kary Mullis invented the PCR test which has been widely used in biological research and widely misused in medical diagnosis. He received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1993. Here he is, being a radical empiricist:
"There is no counsel of elders. No austere body of experts looking out for us to see that we don’t do something really dumb. We’re on our own here…
"Science is not a set of beliefs. Scientists don’t believe anything…
"You always have to be ready to have your favorite theory proven wrong, and if you’re not, you shouldn’t be doing science."
It's one thing to appropriately call out religious beliefs masquerading as science, it's another thing to not recognize scientism masquerading as the scientific method. Mainstream official science is full of unsubstantiated beliefs, treated as doctrines with claims that "the science is settled." The zealous attacks upon open debate are a clear sign that religious scientism has usurped critical thinking. As Carl Sagan reminds us, "The suppression of uncomfortable ideas may be common in religion or in politics, but it is not the path to knowledge, and there's no place for it in the endeavor of science."
Thanks for this. I spent decades arguing with my father, a military research scientist, about whether 'public understanding of science' (which he felt was lacking) was about how to think about science - my view - or about whether people knew and accepted whatever's promulgated as 'scientific fact' - his view. I have no doubt that he was a good researcher at the lab bench on his own specialties, but felt he had to accept what he was told by other specialists. Added to this he had to accept that he couldn't go and explore any phenomena he thought interesting or potentially useful - at the end of his life he admitted to me that he'd had proposals turned down because they were not 'weaponizable'. Whether it's for profit to the pharmaceutical companies, or for killing in war, there's a great swathe of knowledge covered up or suppressed by these priorities. These days when people are shouting loudest about 'settled science', that's when I spend more time looking for alternative ideas and discoveries.
